The Real Housewives of Orange County: What is it teaching women?

The Real Housewives of Orange County is a show that follows five women around while they live their everday life, spend their money, and do what they do best, bicker. To me this show leans both ways. One way being that it shows viewers that some of these women have put their blood, sweat and tears into their jobs, and the other way being that some women need to depend on their husbands for a life, while they dont do anything.

Take Alexis Bellino for example, she's one of the five housewives, and according to her, she lives an "amazing" life. What does this amazing life consist of? Working out seven days a week, getting botox as much as she can, going to church to understand how to be a better wife, and mother, and mixing her husbands food together, because he doesnt know how. God forbid she eats a dounut, she would "kick herself" because she might gain .01 pounds. This video is a clip from season five, where you see Alexis and her husband having dinner. Here you can hear her views on why she does what she does. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cebWcm_Tak&feature=related. If you skip to around 3:30 and watch until 5:30, that is the dinner scence with her husband.

What is hard for me to understand, is why women still believe that they need to depend on their husbands. Why is the thought of being independent so scary to some women? Is it because their afraid they may never get a husband that way? What is this show teaching women? To me, this is teaching some women to cater to their "man". To workout every day of the week, because by tomorrow, there's going to be a new pretty face in town and you need to grab his attention. You need to be the only one that takes care of the kids, because he's had a long and hard day. But dont worry, he's going to reward you with a seven karat diamond necklace after all of your hard work.

  1. I agree completely. The way I see it, we're in a time now where women can survive on their own & be successful. They don't need a husband to dote on them & buy them jewelry just for making sure their child lived through the day. The women on these "Real Housewives" shows remind me of the mothers portrayed in "The Nanny Diaries" movie; hiring nannies to practically raise their children for them.

  2. Some women do still need to depend on their husbands because they are not financially stabled. Although women today have the option to be independent and make their own money some women have less options than others. I know a female who has three children, she's married to the father and she's only 20! So there she has no real chance to be fully independent. As for the real housewives they have every opportunity to grow on their own I just believe they are lazy and don't want to do for themselves. I appreciate my boyfriend buying me things but I dont want to give up my independence and let go of a career to please him. Where is the dignity in being a real woman? This show is a fantasy!
